This recipe was prepared using Braun’s MQ9 Hand blender with its blending wand attachment, food processor with slicing blade attachment, Mini chopper attachment and whisk attachment.

Ingredients

Pie crust:

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup chilled unsalted butter, cut into 8 pieces
  • 1 tbsp real maple syrup
  • 3-4 tbsp ice water

Filling:

  • All-purpose flour (for dusting)
  • 1 ½ lbs assorted apples, peeled and cored
  • 1 tbsp pure maple syrup
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 large egg, whisked with 1 teaspoon water

Icing:

  • ½ cup confectionery sugar
  • 2 tsp reserved bacon fat
  • 1 tbsp pure maple syrup
  • 1 tbsp milk

  1. To make the crust, add flour and salt to a medium bowl. Scatter the butter pieces on top. Using Braun’s MQ9 Hand blender with blending wand attachment pulse until the texture is coarse meal.  Add maple syrup and ice water and using your hands gather dough into a ball. Add more water if dry, until dough comes together. Form into a square, wrap in plastic, and chill until firm, about 2 hours.
  2. While dough is chilling prepare filling. Cook bacon in a large skillet over medium high heat until crisp but not burned. Remove bacon from pan. Leave one teaspoon of fat in the pan. Place 2 teaspoons of fat in a bowl and discard the rest.
  3. Slice apples in the MQ 9 Food processor with slicing blade attachment. Cook apples in pan with 1 teaspoon bacon fat for about 5 minutes or until apples are softened. (Cooked apples should be about 2 cups.)
  4. Pour apples into a large bowl. Add cinnamon, maple syrup and stir to combine. Chop bacon in the Braun MQ9 Mini chopper attachment. Sprinkle crumbled bacon over the apple slices and stir to combine.
  5. After dough is chilled, remove from refrigerator. Roll out dough on a floured surface to a 15x12-inch rectangle. Cut into 6 rectangles. Brush edges of rectangles with water; mound some apples in center of each. Fold dough over, and press edges with a fork to seal. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet, brush with egg wash. Cut slits in tops. Place in freezer for 20 minutes.
  6. Preheat oven to 375°.
  7. Remove pies from freezer and bake rotating sheet halfway through, until juices are bubbling and pastry is golden brown, 35–40 minutes (juices will run onto parchment). Transfer to a wire rack. Serve warm or at room temperature.
  8. While pie is baking, make glaze. Add confectionery sugar and reserved two teaspoons bacon fat to a medium-sized deep bowl. Add maple syrup and one tablespoon milk. Whisk together using the Braun MQ 9 Hand blender with whisk attachment. After pies come out of oven and have a chance to cool slightly, drizzle glaze on top of pies. Serve immediately or enjoy at room temperature.
